Mercedes-Benz finally decided to step up to the plate and introduce an Off-Road package for the ML & GL classes.
It is important to note that this package is not certified for NAFTA diesel engines and therefore will not be available on the ML 350 BlueTEC and GL 350 BlueTEC. Diesel engines are the highest sellers in this category in Canada and as result this state of affairs is not seating well with many customers. However, they are hopeful that MB must be working on certifying diesel engines too.
The message from Mercedes-Benz Canada (MBC) is that beginning with January production, dealers will be able to order the new Off-Road Package for the following vehicles: ML 350 4MATIC, ML 550 4MATIC, GL 450 4MATIC & GL 550 4MATIC.
MBC further reiterates that, this new package is ideal for customers who wish to extend the capability of their SUV both on and off road. Package highlights include a 6-mode driving program selector with animations in the COMAND display, 2-speed transfer case, underguard body protection and a locking centre differential.

- The Off-road package gives the driver greater control over the vehicle's handling – both on the road and for off-road driving.
- The characteristics of ESP(Electronic Stability Program) transmission, suspension, engine, steering and, if applicable, ASR (Acceleration Stability Control) are adapted to the selected drive program.
The driver can select from the following drive programs:
- AUTO: standard vehicle settings for normal driving
- Off-road 1 (Sand, Light Terrain): raised ESP/ETS (Electronic Traction System) thresholds, off-road ABS setting, air suspension level 1, comfortable damping, off-road transmission and accelerator tuning.
- Off-road 2 (Rough Terrain): raised ESP thresholds, sensitive ETS thresholds, air suspension level 2, comfortable damping, off-road transmission and accelerator tuning, DSR & centre differential lock engaged.
- Sport: air suspension level Sport, sporty damping, sport transmission,steering and accelerator tuning, dynamic differential lock activation
- Snow: Optimized stability in turns and optimized transmission shift points.
- Trailer: Optimized transmission shift modes and differential locking function.
- ML Class $3600 Probably because this package will also include the Airmatic Suspension.
- GL Class $2500 The Airmatic Suspension is standard equipment on this truck.
